MUSM Clinical Faculty Development Series

Emergency Medicine

Describe the complexities and unique risks associated with medical planning for large-scale events such as the Olympics, including contemporary threats like mass shootings, bombings, and vehicle rammings. Explain the historical context of Olympic-related emergencies, with specific emphasis on how the Munich 1972 incident reshaped global perspectives on event security and medical preparedness. Identify the essential components of a successful mass casualty incident (MCI) response plan, including unified incident command, EMS transport coordination, and trauma center readiness. Assess the structure and effectiveness of the Los Angeles Trauma System, including its transformation after the 2005 and 2008 train incidents and the development of the Medical Alert Center. Evaluate the role of first responder training in Olympic readiness, with a focus on perishable skills, tactical medical support, and the integration of law enforcement and EMS personnel in active incident zones. Recognize the strategic advantages of Tactical Emergency Medical Support (TEMS) units in providing point-of-injury care during high-risk public safety events. Apply best practices from past Olympic and mass casualty incidents to local emergency preparedness efforts, including triage distribution protocols and cross-agency communication.
