Pediatric Grand Rounds

Caring for Children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and an Introductiion to the AAP Autism Resource Toolkit for Clinicians

Presenters will be Dr. Kay R. Lewis MD, FAAP Developmental and Behavior Medicine , Autism and other Developmental Disorders, Clinical Associate Professor of Pediatrics Florida State University, School of Medicine Her Co-Presenter Debra Kermes, MS, BCBA 1. The participant will utilize the AAP Autism Toolkit and handouts to screen patients in their practices for Autism Spectrum Disorders, according to AAP recommendations, identifying those for whom additional diagnostic evaluation is indicated. 2. The participant will refer patients with suspected autism spectrum disorders and/or developmental delays as soon as they are identified, for further evaluation and treatment by Speech/Language Pathologists (delayed dysfluent, dysfunctional or atypical speech or communication), Physical therapist (gross motor abnormalities), and BCBA Behavior analysts (behavioral management and training issues), while further diagnostic evaluation is in process, rather than delay and risk increasing the severity unnecessarily. 3. The participant will furnish parents with information on community contacts for further information, support, and resources for raising childrren with autism spectrum disorders, as well as referring to Early Steps if younger than 3, or Child Find if older than 3, and not already involved with the public schools
