Translating Lessons Learned from Combat Surgery into Civilian Trauma Care

At the conclusion, the participant should be able to:
1) CATEGORIZE the types of combat wounds seen in modern warfare; 2) CONTRAST and COMPARE the differences and similarities between combat wounds and civilian wounds; 3) DISCUSS the current injury pattern that result in death that are potentially preventable; 4) CLASSIFY the lessons learned in pre-hospital management of examguinating hemorrhage that apply to civilian trauma; 5) INTRODUCE unique ethical challenges inherent in the treatment of combat wounded civilians and prisoners of war; 6) DEFINE and DISCUSS the current practices of Damage Control Resuscitation and Damage Control Surgery as applied to the battlefield and the potential applicability to civilian care; 7) INVENTORY the advances in the management of wounded partients that have already transitioned from the military to the civilian practice; 8) HIGHLIGHT the role of temporary vascular shunting; 9) PRESENT and critically EVALUATE the lessons learned from war.
