

At the conclusion, they participant should be able to:
1) IDENTIFY and DESCRIBE the basic principles and philosophy of Motivational Interviewing (MI); 2) USE basic MI skills to build rapport, demonstrate respect, and support clients’ self-determination; 3) ELICIT and selectively REINFORCE patient motivational statements, expressions of concerns about change, and/or desire and reasons for wanting to quit tobacco or make other health related changes; 4) DEMONSTRATE reflective listening skills to more fully understand clients’ perspectives about “the problem” and potential strategies to address those problems; 5) DISCUSS strategies for teaching and reinforcing students to develop their professional skills in promoting behavioral change using the MI framework in their patient interviewing and health education sessions with patients.
